Terms of Service
Last updated: 5 August 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Locent ("the app", "we", "us"), a personal expense tracker for Android. By installing or using the app, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Locent is an offline-first application. We do not operate a server, we do not host your data, and we have no user accounts — so these Terms are shorter and narrower than those of a typical online service.
1. Your licence to use Locent
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Locent on devices you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use.
You agree not to:
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the app, except where that restriction is prohibited by applicable law;
- redistribute, resell, sublicense or rent the app, or publish it under your own name;
- use the app to break any law, or to interfere with the Google services the backup feature relies on.
2. Your data is yours, and it is your responsibility
Everything you enter into Locent — accounts, transactions, categories, recurring rules, budgets and goals — belongs to you and stays on your device. We claim no ownership over it and, as described in our Privacy Policy, we never receive it.
Because we hold nothing, we cannot recover anything on your behalf. You are responsible for:
- the accuracy of the records you enter, and any decision you make based on them;
- keeping your device and your Google account secure, including any device passcode or biometric lock;
- keeping a copy of anything you cannot afford to lose — see Section 3 for what backup does and does not promise.
3. Backups and restores
The backup feature is optional and off until you enable it. Three things about it are worth stating plainly rather than burying:
- It is a backup, not a sync. You can restore a backup onto a new device and continue there. Using two devices at the same time is not supported: the most recent backup will overwrite the other on restore.
- There is no passphrase to set or lose. Backups are encrypted on your device before upload, with a key the app derives itself. You are never asked to invent or remember one, and there is nothing you can forget that would lock you out of your own backup — a reinstall, or a brand-new phone, can restore from your Drive without any secret you have to keep.
- What that encryption is and is not for. It protects the backup file in transit and at rest in your Drive, so a copy obtained on its own is not readable as plain text. Because the key is derived by the app rather than from a secret only you know, it is not designed to withstand someone who has both the backup file and the ability to inspect the app. If you want protection stronger than that, do not rely on the backup feature for it.
We make no guarantee that a backup will complete at any particular time. Scheduled backups depend on your device's operating system, network and battery conditions, and Android may defer background work. A backup is a safety net, not a contractual commitment.
4. Google account and third-party services
If you enable Google Drive backup, you connect your own Google account and the app stores encrypted files in the hidden app-data folder of your Drive. Your use of Google's services is governed by Google's Terms of Service and Google's Privacy Policy, which are between you and Google.
We are not responsible for the availability, pricing, storage quotas or behaviour of Google Drive, and we cannot restore backups that Google loses, deletes or makes unavailable. You may revoke Locent's access to your Google account at any time from your Google Account permissions; doing so stops future backups and restores.
5. Locent is not financial advice
Locent is a record-keeping tool. It does not provide financial, investment, accounting, tax or legal advice, and nothing it displays — including budgets, reports, totals or projections — should be treated as such. Figures shown in the app are derived from the data you enter and are only as accurate as that data. For advice about your finances, consult a qualified professional.
6. Purchase, payment and refunds
Locent is a paid app. You buy it once through Google Play, and that purchase covers the app and its updates — there is no subscription, and no feature is held back behind a further payment.
Google Play is the merchant for that sale, not us. Your payment is made to Google, handled under Google Play's terms of service, and we never receive or hold your card or payment details. Refunds are likewise handled by Google under its own refund policy; request one through Google Play rather than from us. If you have a problem we can actually fix, contact us — we would rather solve it than have you out of pocket.
7. Availability, updates and changes to the app
We may add, change or remove features, release updates, or stop distributing the app at any time. Updates may be delivered through the app store or as over-the-air updates. We will not deliberately release an update designed to make your existing data unreadable; backups made on an older version are migrated forward on restore.
If we stop distributing Locent, the copy already installed on your device keeps working — it needs no server of ours to run — and your data stays where it has always been, on your device and in any backup you made.
8. Intellectual property
The app, its name, its logo and its source code (other than the content you create) remain the property of the developer or its licensors, and are protected by copyright and other laws. These Terms do not transfer any of those rights to you. Third-party open-source components included in the app remain subject to their own licences.
9. Disclaimer of warranties
Locent is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any defect will be corrected, nor that backups or restores will always succeed.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the developer will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, or for any loss of data, loss of profits, or loss of goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of — or inability to use — the app. This includes data lost through device failure, uninstallation, a failed or unavailable backup, a backup that could not be restored, or changes to third-party services.
Our total aggregate liability to you for all claims relating to the app is limited to the amount you paid for it. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
11. Termination
You may stop using Locent at any time by uninstalling it, which removes the local database from your device. Any backups you created remain in your own Google Drive until you delete them. This licence terminates automatically if you breach these Terms; the sections on intellectual property, warranties and liability survive termination.
12. Age requirement
Locent is not directed to children under the age of 13, or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction. By using the app you confirm that you meet that requirement.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time — for example, when the app gains new features. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above and post the revised Terms at this address. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the revised Terms.
14. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Arab Emirates, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts of the United Arab Emirates have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of any mandatory consumer-protection laws of the country where you live.
